April 25, 1854: Leading Creek Church and Cemetery were founded. For over 150 years the cemetery has faithfully served as the community burial ground for Primitive Baptists, Methodists, IOOF members, and many other local families from throughout the Leading Creek basin. The church and cemetery were established in 1854 under the leadership of Elder David P. Murphy, with Hickman Chenoweth, Archibald Ferguson, and several other founding members — nearly fifty years before the nearby town of Montrose was named and incorporated in 1895.
